Interwiew to Luis LandeoHey guys the band have 4 years but can you tell to Arsenal Del Metalero how the band started?
ONICECTOMY officially started in 2008..It started as a 4 pieces combo with the intention of playing death metal mostly influenced by the american 90's death metal scene (CannibalCorpse,Suffocation,Morbid Angel..); at the end of the same Year we recorded our first EP "MANIACAL EPIDEMY" -self produced - and had a little promotional tour along Italy; the next year, Angelo (guitarist) joined the band: his experience and his technique radically modify Onicectomy’s sound, passing from an elemental songwriting and a very raw and empty sound to a more articulated and thoughtful writing, with faster and harmonized riffs most influenced by some of modern brutal death metal masters such as Dying Fetus, Devourment and Cephalic Carnage.
Among some death fest and live gigs the band starts to write their first full lenght; in summer 2010 we sign a deal with russian label COYOTE RECORDS for the release of our debut album. Before the album was released we had a big line-up change: Valerio, founder guitarist and Savino - vocals - left the band due to personal and working troubles so Gigi joins the combo as new onicectomy Singer.With this line up the band have many shows and fests all over Italy..16TH OCTOBER IS the official release party:DROWNING FOR SALVATION IS OUT!!!
What mean Onicectomy? and why this name for the band?Onicectomy is not litterally an English words: it is just a way to translate the italian word "ONICECTOMIA" which is a kind of surgical intervention done in order to extirpate ingrown toe's nail... You know in Death metal scene it's common to find band who use medical words as their name or as title for their tracks and so on, therefore either me and the other founder member,Valerio, have both suffered for ingrown toe's nail, we decided to use our medical experience to give the name to our band.
This 2011 the band release the first full lenght: Drowning for Salvation how was the recording session?The recording session for DROWNING FOR SALVATION has been so long and full of troubles: we entered SOUND CUBED STUDIO in september 2010 and we have been forced to interrupt the recording session several times due to personal and working engagement of our sound engineer and of someone in the band...We finished with mixing and mastering in March 2011; By the way it has been a positive and constructing experience: we have already worked with Antonio Tafaro, our sound enginner, and we both knew how to work to try to get the best sound. He has been so patient with us and has tried to satify all our requests and now you can judge if the work has been positive or not.
How was the process of write the lyrics?I have written all the lyrics for Drowning for Salvation: we decided before starting the songwriting this would have been a concept album concerning the cruentus world of human sacrifices in Aztech society and we wanted to compare the way how aztech religion tyrannized the people at that time, and the way how religions do the same nowadays after several centuries. So I've done some studies about some of the most important "gods" in Aztech religion and about the way with whom people was used to celebrate them, and i've tried to describe those sacrifices adding some gore and splatter details coming out from my deviated mind as a good brutal death metal lyric deserve.
Had you the chance to work with a recording producer? or the band had an independent work in this first album?As i said before We have worked for the second time With antonio Tafaro from sound cubed studio...We don't have all the professional gear and the knowledge needed to get a powerful and blasting sound..Dimitri from Coyote Records has helped us during the mixing session to find the best sound set up.
How goes the italian metal scene?Italian death metal scene is growing enormously during these last years, I think we have not many things to envy to other scenes for what concern the quality of the albums released: we have band such us Hour of Penance,Natron,Putridity,Septycal Gorge,Exhumer,Vulvectomy,Sickening that have fans in all the world, Antropofagus are coming back after 10 years with a killer release, and also the bands who just have relesead their debut album, i'm sure they will find the place they deserve into international scene. If we want to analyze our scene under the point of view of "people support" there's a totally different consideration to do: in my opinion people does not support undeground in the right way: they don't go to concerts, they don't buy CDs or Merchandise from the bands and there are a lot of conflicts between musicians and at last but not at least we have the plague of the booking agencies who ask money to the bands to insert them into the bill of a fest or a big show so only bands consisting in rich people is "lucky" to join big events.
Fortunately there are some litte examples of guys who dedicate all their passion to the underground who organize gigs and festival in order to let people know underground music and supporting bands (You know who you are).
Are you thinking have a tour for this 2012?Yeah 2012 will be almost totally dedicate to promote our album: we have a few gigs confirmed in Italy for the first 2 months of next year and we are going on Tour in Europe on April. I can't reveal the details right now but i can make you sure it will be a killer experience cause we'll tour with one of the best brutal band in the Italian scene and we'll have gigs with some of most influent bands of the international death metal scene..I think we'll have gigs in Switzerland,Austria,Germany and maybe England, so guys, if u'd like to listen to some brutal death metal made in Italy, stay tuned and don't miss the gigs.
