Interview to John Longstreth from Origin

Interview by Luis Landeo
Nice to meet you, John, welcome to this interview, well are you thinking in a tour for this 2012?
We are! So far we have a European tour lined up with Psycroptic and we're currently working on US, Asia, and of course South America.Well this year the band release a new album: Entity, lets talk about the first song ("Expulsion of Fury") and one of my favorites in this album, the message of this song
is practicly about the apocalypsis, how born the concept for this song? was you thinking in the 2012 prophecy for the lyrics of this song?
That would be an question better suited for Paul because he wrote the lyrics. However, just for fun i should state that anything i write for the drums in an Origin song has been written to make people believe that yes, a drum set CAN bring about the apocalypse. (laughing)Usually the font covers of Origin album have space monsters except the first one album (Origin-2000) how born the idea of the moon like a font cover for this new album? and what represent the moon for this new album? or what is the concept behind?
We went through a few different ideas that included monsters and lightning but they didn't fit this album. The band was never happy with the alien face on Antithesis, and personally i'm not moved by scary monsters on album covers to begin with. Id rather have the scary music. For this album we were presented with a certain level of freedom thanks to Nuclear Blast and we wanted to get back to the mentality of the first album cover. Its vague, but its ominous. It lets you know that there's something that goes "bump in the night", but you have to take a closer look, you have to listen. Lower the level of eye candy and idealistically, you entice the listener to pay more attention and listen. Why this name: "Entity" for this new album?
Because there's something inside. Again, its vague, but the vagueness is meant to lure you in. You don't grab this album and know what its all about in 30seconds. Lots of people these days want to download it in 30 seconds and have it absorbed in 5min so they can post about it on Facebook by the afternoon. We want people to come in, listen, pay attention, even if its only a little bit. Luckily, for most, its still only a 35-40 min Origin album. If i had MY way, we would have a full blown double vinyl concept album by now!(laughs)
In this album we can find short songs like: "Banishing Illusion", "Committed", "Purgatory" and the instrumental "The Descent" do you think short song can have a lot power for a death metal album?
Of course. We have always enjoyed writing short songs. As you know by now, our ability to write a 7 min epic is also improving but it would be wrong to abandon our roots and abandon what it was that drew people to us. We have in no way tired of what it was that originally drew us together to write music. With more of 11 years playing, are you thinking release a DVD?
We have actually been moving slowly toward that for a long time. We want to make sure its a real event. We have lots of footage with old members of the band, the first Origin concerts, tour footage etc etc etc. I don't want to say too much other than it WILL happen, and simply that Its worth it for us to take our time here because it should be special.Well to finish this interwiew do you have a message for the Origin fans?
Of course! See you all very soon, and thank you for listening!
