Interview to Heikki Saari of Norther

Interview by Luis Landeo
Hello Heikki nice to have this interview with you, Whats been your favorite Norther tour so far? and what was the best experience in norther in all this years?
I think my favorite tour was with Turisas at UK and Europe on 2008. It was pretty long and frustrating tour, but in the end everything went really well! Although we had some problems with the bus breaking down two times and everyone being really sick at times, it still was a blast! Turisas guys are nice guys, so we got along very well and achieved some new fanbase aswell.
Whats your favorite Norther album? and why?
Of course my favorite Norther album is Cricle Regenerated. It is the most diverse and musically talented album by Norther so far. We also put more effort to it when composing it, than ever before in Norther history. And of course since it's the first album with the new lineup, it's a sort of a milestone for the band. My other favorite albums for Norther are Death Unlimited and Solution 7 EP.
What sort of kick pedals do you use?
Nowadays i use Pearl Demon Drives. I used to go with Pearl Eliminator belt drive pedals for years - i actually used the exact same pedals all the way from around 2002 to 2010 - until the Demon Drives came out. Needless to say after trying out DW's, Iron Cobras, Tricks, Axis', they're the best money can buy!
Any tip or suggestions for all the dummers fans out there?
Hmm, be yourself! Play music, not your instrument. Making music is not only fucking around with different instruments, but it's making THE music itself! Listen to different kinds of music, get inspired by and practice like hell! Most of all, respect other musicians (especially bass players) and be part of the composing process. That's way you keep yourself inspired and become a talented musician - not only a drummer.
Tell us about how long it took write, rehearse and record the new album?
I'm not quite exactly sure.. First songs were written already 1,5-2 years before the release date. We practiced and composed pretty much the whole year i guess and especially with Jukka had some great time composing all the baselines for drums and bass. Listen for instance. Falling and you'll figure out what i mean.
How was record the album in Astia Studios?
We've been working with Anssi at Astia Studios several times before (the rest of the band even more), and.. Whoa, what can i say.. Anssi is an incredible person, his working methods are first-class and the whole studio from the recording rooms and hallways all the way to bandrooms, kitchen etc. is just astonishing! This place should be a tourist target for rock musicians or something.
What band and albums do you take influence from and what bands inspire your drumming?
I usually nowadays don't really take influence from other bands or drummers. Of course i have my idols and musician i dig the most, but i still have my own style and sound. Sometimes i tend to try out different kind of performing in let's say like rehearsal conditions (like maybe playing with a bit less powerfully etc.), but till now i haven't found anything that i'd like to stick with. I usually just revert back to old me by just beating the shit out of the kit and having a blast. :) Biggest inspiration comes from live shows. After an amazing live show you always have the feeling that "this is the shit, this is why we're doing the thing!" and you immediately want to go and play more, more and more shows and rehearsal etc.!
Have you ever taken any formal drum lessongs and can you read drum notation or music?
I've been studying music theory, had drum lessons and have of course also studied notations for drums and other instruments aswell. I use books like for example Stick Controll and Syncopation for practicing these days (still) and i must say that those ones are something, that's a must for every drummer (in addition to others aswell)!
Any last message for the fans in South America? and plans to play with norther in SOUTH AMERICA?
Greets to all Norther fans at South America! We'll definitely hope to come over do some shows some day! You may help us by contacting local organizations and promoters and just by spreading the word out there! Stay metal!
