Interview to Alex Maramaldo of Encefalo

Interview by Luis Landeo
Welcome Alex, nice to meet you, well for start this interview, I know you released last year the first full lenght: "slave Of Pain" how was released? and how difficult was for you this way of the independent releases? and how many copies released? and how goes the sells?
I thank you for the great opportunity Luis, sorry for the simple English. Yes, you are correct, we made this release with a lot of fight and courage, Slave of Pain came in good time, to break the prejudice and show all hatred of Brazil's northeast. The album was produced in three studios, the last, mixed and master with the big Moises Veloso, already known person here in our scenario. We released the CD from north to southern of Brazil throughout the year 2012, there were made one thousand of copies and they are sold through websites, partners and the band itself.
For this album was taken only two tracks of the demo: "Destruction" and "Nightmare" so why you played 2 tracks of the demo for this full lenght?
We launched the DEMO with our old drummer (Alexcorpse), with the entry of Rodrigo, these songs in specific won a different beat, so we decided to re-record these tracks, so closing all our link to these works.
By the way how do you see the evolution in sound of encefalo with this album and doing a comparation with the demo?
'Destruction' has many pinches by me and Lailton and all the old lineup, 100% of influence in Old Sepultura, 'Slave of Pain' was not much different then follow a line year 80's , dry sound, raw, with more influences in bands like Destruction and Vader, and we try to pass a lot of weight. Slave of Pain was and is the face of what Encéfalo pass through that time, so it has great representation for us, is like looking at the past and present, and aimed at the future, great feelings.
Who did the cover for this album? and what represent and the concept behind?
The album art was designed by our friend Thiago Olyveyra, cartoonist and lover of comics. The cover tries to represent all of us, every day we try to escape from our reality, but we are always imposed by the rules of society and religious impositions, to want and not have the power to have, just try to fight and be suffocated, that's the idea of the cover.
Alex can you tell for arsenal del metalero readers how the band started?
The band started in 2002, without many pretensions, only a tribute band to the old Sepultura, as time passed by, we saw the need to make our own music, which was when the first problems appeared as members and various other things, in 2007 we managed to establish and since then we are in the fight by the Underground to show our music and try to pass our ideas. Just me and Lailton remain from the original lineup, Rodrigo accompanies us since 2009 and this year 2013 came the great Luiz Henrique on bass.
How big is now the scene in recife (CEARA) brazil? and is curious cuz in southamerica people only know the metal scene from rio do janeiro and sao Paulo
The scene in Recife (CEARA) has been great for almost its entire existence, great bands and artists come out of that region, in northeastern of Brazil, we are lacking a few things, among them, access and availability in the media, the scene in the Southeast have access more easily to this new technology and therefore can stand out more easily, but here in the northeast we have big names in the scene, which are as good as the guys from other regions.
Do you have in mind a tour for promote the band?
Yes, we will have a new work on the second half of 2013, which will be promoted with another Brazilian tour and in 2014 with a tour in other countries of South America. There's other tour in speculation, including one in the United States and another in Europe.
Of the songs of this last album, what is your favorite song and why?
I really like "Slave of Pain" and "Nightmare", Nightmare was the first song I composed in 2006, the lyrics talks about protest and revolt, which sounded almost Black Metal and makes you look inside yourself.
What equipment do you use for play and record? and why?
To record I use Jackson guitars with a more Heavy Metal picking and BC Rich guitars, both to give more aggressiveness to the songs as they are reputable brands in the genre and never disappoint. For effect I use Meteoro amps, marshall, randall and plug-ins, and in concerts I still use the same set of guitars, only using custom distortion pedals, recently I closed a partnership with Targino custom pedals, which is in the process of manufacturing all our custom effects and pedals. For voice I use a Shure Super 55 to give that retro sound over the vocal.
Any last words?
Thanks again for the interview opportunity, I am very grateful, hope to see you soon!, Big hug to all the readers of Arsenal Del Metalero, and thanks to all of you who support us in every way, from purchasing materials, enjoying our sound, disseminating and even exchanging ideas and having a few beers!
