Entrevista a Jesper Anastasiadis de Turisas

Hails Jesper, bienvenido a Arsenal Del Metalero, es una gusto conocerte, y bien para iniciar esta entrevista dime si Turisas ¿están pensando trabajar en un nuevo álbum? tenemos que recordar el último álbum fue lanzado en el 2013, y fue tu primer álbum con ellos
Hola Luis, es un placer hacer esta entrevista! Para la primera pregunta, digamos que nuestra situación actual es un secreto y creo que lo anunciaremos muy pronto.

Por cierto ¿Cómo fue para ti trabajar en el álbum: "Turisas 2013"? ¿qué experiencias me puedes decir acerca de los días de grabación para ese álbum?
Mi trabajo en el álbum fue bastante corto pero intenso. Yo acababa de llegar de unas vacaciones de un mes, y me dirigí directamente al estudio, no tenía tiempo para ensayar las canciones y sólo trabaje tres días sin parar. Esa fue una experiencia nueva para mí y fue una bonita lección de cómo prepararse para la grabación en general. Tuve algunas "agradables" ampollas en mis dedos al final. Por supuesto, mi parte era bastante fácil en comparación con la cantidad de trabajo que tuvieron Mathias y Jussi en el álbum. Más tarde, grabé algunas voces principales y de fondo también, sobre todo en temas como: "Greek Fire" y "We Ride Toguether".

Una cosa muy importante para una banda como Turisas son los tours, dime ¿cómo fue la primera gira con Turisas? y ¿cómo es para ti tocar en vivo con una banda con una gran cantidad de energía y fans como Turisas?
Mi primera gira con Turisas fue también mi primera gira fuera de Finlandia. Y fue casi 8 semanas de duración. Pero fue impresionante, pienso en lo mucho. Hicimos 70.000 toneladas de Metal, luego continuó durante cinco semanas en Estados Unidos y Canadá y luego hicimos un par de semanas en América del Sur. Es una locura pensar que yo sobreviví, pero todo fue tan divertido y nuevo que yo no pensé en ello. Empezamos en el Caribe, ¿no es genial? Todas las presentaciones fueron increíbles y por supuesto, América del Sur llevo todo al siguiente nivel. Espero que volvamos allí pronto. Por nuestra parte en América del Norte, tuvimos a Firewind y Stolen Babies en una gira con nosotros, y dos de ellos eran personas muy agradables e interesantes. Llegar a ver todas las grandes ciudades de los Estados Unidos por primera vez y tocar cada noche fue una experiencia increíble, no puedo pasarme hablando ella. Lo que viene a realizar con Turisas, siempre he tocado con mucha energía, pero tocar con ellos he tenido que intervenir seriamente en mi forma de tocar y tuve que aprender a ser aún más invertido en el show. Pero es un buen desafío poder llevar todo a cabo constantemente mientras estas corriendo arriba y abajo del escenario.

Tengo curiosidad, pero ¿cuántos minutos u horas toma a la banda pintar el cuerpo con pintura de color rojo y negro y vestir con esos uniformes de batalla antes de cada show? Apuesto es algo épico hacer eso
Conseguir la pintura de hecho es la parte fácil, primero que toma cerca de una hora, luego se necesita algo de como 30 minutos. Retirar la pintura es siempre una molestia con diferente calidad de duchas disponibles. A veces uno termina de ejecutar fuera en el invierno para llegar a algún lugar dentro y todo lo que hay en espera es una ducha fría fría. Muy Agradable. Pero es genial que siempre que tengamos una hora antes de los espectáculos juntos y lleguemos a pasar el rato.

Tu tocas el bajo pero yo sé que tu también tocas en una banda de funk, así que ¿como tus influencias de la música funk influyeron en el sonido del último disco?
Sí, he tocado el bajo desde que tenía 11 años de edad, y toco todo tipo de música. Mis influencias básicamente sólo me hacen más de un músico versátil. Pero, por supuesto, por ejemplo, el funk se oía en mi forma de tocar como un enfoque más groove y basada en una improvisación. Odio que si un músico sea duro y es evidente que él / ella no puede hacer nada más que la parte que tenía delante. La música sucede en el momento y si tu estas reproduciendo el mismo espectáculo exactamente con cosa tras cosa el espectáculo se vuelve aburrido. Durante el último álbum, sin embargo, creo que mi estilo de tocar sólo ascendió a algunas líneas de bajo improvisados aquí y allá.

La banda ha tocado en el 2013 en Sudamérica, ¿cómo fue para ti tocar en esta parte del continente? y la banda considerando volver a tocar en Sudamérica?
Como he dicho antes, América del Sur fue una experiencia increíble. Creo que todas las bandas que han recorrido no estarían de acuerdo. Para nosotros fue básicamente, tomar un vuelo, tratar de dormir, estar en la furgoneta, la prueba de sonido, espectáculo, furgoneta, hotel, quizá, otro vuelo y otra vez. Yo estuve hecho un desastre después de eso! Pero los shows fueron tan intensos y nos recibieron muy bien, que vale la pena. Yo lo haría de nuevo tan pronto como sea posible. Nosotros no tenemos planes sólidos, pero estamos tratando de volver allí.

Hello Luis, pleased to do the interview! For the first question, let’s just say our current situation is a secret and I think an announcement is coming soon.

By the way how was for you work in the album: "Turisas 2013"? what experiences can you tell me about this recording days for that album?
My work on the album was pretty short but intense. I had just come off a month long vacation, headed straight to the studio, didn’t have time to rehearse the songs and just worked three days nonstop. That was a new experience for me and it was a nice lesson of how to prepare for recording in general. Had some nice blisters on my fingers in the end. Of course, my part was pretty easy compared to how much Mathias and Jussi worked on the album. Later, I recorded some lead and backing vocals too, mainly on Greek Fire and We Ride Together.

A very important thing to stay in a band like Turisas are the tours, tell me how was the first tour with Turisas? and how is play for you in live with a band with a lot energy and fans like Turisas?
My first tour with Turisas was also my first tour outside Finland. And it was almost 8 weeks long. But it was awesome, I think back on it a lot. We did 70000 Tons Of Metal, then continued for five weeks in the States and Canada and then did couple of weeks in South America. It’s crazy to think that I survived it, but everything was so fun and new that I didn’t think about it. Come on, we started off in the Caribbean, how cool is that? All the audiences were amazing and of course, South America took it to the next level. I hope we get back there soon. On our North America part, we had Firewind and Stolen Babies touring with us, and both of them consisted of extremely nice and interesting people. Getting to see all the big cities of the States for the first time and playing every evening was such an amazing experience, I cannot overstate it. What comes to performing with Turisas, I’ve always played with a lot of energy, but playing with them I had to seriously step up my game and had to learn to be even more invested in the show. But it’s a nice challenge to be able to perform consistently while running up and down the stage.

I have curiosity but how many minutes or hours take for the band paint the body with red and black painting and this battle uniforms before to every performance? I bet is something epic do that
Getting the paint done is the easy part, first it took about one hour, now it takes something like 30 minutes. Getting the paint off is always a hassle with different quality of showers available. Sometimes you end up running outside in the winter to get somewhere inside and all there is waiting is a cold, cold shower. Nice. But it’s great that we always have an hour before the show together and get to hang out.

You play the bass guitar but I know you play in a funk band, so how your funk music influences, influyed in the sound of the last album?

Yeah, I’ve played bass since I was 11 years old, and play all kinds of music. My influences basically just make me more of a versatile player. But of course, for example funk could be heard in my playing as a more groove and improvisation based approach. I hate it if a player is stiff and it’s apparent that he/she can’t do anything else than the part before him. Music happens in the moment and if you’re reproducing the exact same thing show after show it gets boring. During the last album, though, I think my playing style only amounted to some improvised bass lines here and there.

The band played in 2013 in southamerica, how was for you play in this part of the continent? and is the band considering return to play in southamerica?
Like I said earlier, South America was an amazing experience. I think all the bands that have toured there would agree. For us it was basically, take a flight, try to sleep, get in the van, soundcheck, show, van, hotel maybe, another flight and again. I was a wreck after that! But the audiences were so intense and we were received so well, that it was all worth it. I would do it again as soon as it’s possible. We don’t have any solid plans, but we’re trying to get back there.
