Entrevista a Nina Spruk de Mist

Hails Nina, bienvenida por primera vez a Arsenal Del Metalero hace prácticamente un año, entrevisté a tu compañera de banda Neža Pecan, y esto fue acerca del demo de la banda, ahora este año la banda lanzó un EP titulado: "Inan'", y para comenzar esta entrevista me gustaría preguntarte ¿cómo fue grabar y lanzar esta producción? y ¿que significa la palabra: "Inan'" es una palabra en esloveno?
Hola, gracias por invitarme. Inan 'fue grabado a finales de 2014 y se nota el progreso que hemos hecho como una banda desde nuestro primer lanzamiento. El título proviene de la palabra Inglés 'estúpida', lo que significa "vacío" o "hueco", que describe la sensación de estar perdido y vacío. Creemos que las canciones en general han mejorado. El sonido es mejor, mi voz han ganado más de profundidad, de sentir y de controlar. Los coros se utilizan más a menudo, y los solos de guitarra son el toque final de las canciones, con lo que le da una sensación extra. Al igual que la demo, nuestro EP fue grabado, mezclado y masterizado por Benjamin CCI.

Por cierto, me gusta el arte de este nuevo álbum hecho por Mihaela Žitko, la baterista de Mist, pero ¿qué concepto representa este arte para las letras de esta nueva producción?
Ambas cubiertas, para el "DEMO 2013" e "Inan'" fueron creadas por nuestra baterista, Mihaela Zitko. Ella ha sido un artista toda su vida y actualmente está asistiendo a la escuela de arte. La portada de "Inan" retrata la diversidad en la naturaleza, los vivos y los muertos en su convivencia. Buscamos inspiración en la naturaleza y sus diferencias, sobre todo en la mente humana y el alma, donde cada ser humano experimenta sus lados buenos y malos, que se ven obligados a convivir.

Ahora, en ¿que tomas inspiración Nina para escribir tus líricas? y cuando cantas, ¿cómo enfocas tu energía vocal para expresar tus propias líricas?
La mayoría de las líricas son escritas por Neža y Ema. Neža busca la inspiración en el interior, describiendo sus emociones y miedos, sentimientos de pérdida y desesperación ... Por otro lado, Ema busca inspiración en el mundo exterior, que describe lo que ve y lo que se siente. Cada canción en "Inan'" tiene una historia diferente. Frozen Velvet e "Inan" son sobre el amor, "Under The Night Sky" es un cuento de brujas haciendo hechizos en el claro de luna y "Phobia" describe los sentimientos de terror y paranoia. Siempre me concentro en las letras y emociones y trato de expresarlo con mi voz. Cada canción significa algo especial para mí por lo que trabajo duro para añadir unas sensación a cada canción con mi voz.

Háblame de tus técnicas vocales,  como sabes muchos cantantes de metal preparan su voz antes de cantar en vivo o grabar, ¿cuál es tu técnica para preparar tu voz antes de cada grabación y actuación en vivo? ¿y quiénes son tus influencias vocales?
Mis técnicas vocales son simplemente concentrarme en la respiración, el calentamiento de los músculos del diafragma y los faciales. Al grabar ayudo a mis cuerdas vocales con ciruelas qué suavizan la voz y me gusta beber cerveza para calmar mis nervios. También me ayuda a imaginar que estoy en el escenario cantando, a veces sosteniendo un micrófono en mi mano para ayudarme con el show. Mis influencias en la escuela secundaria eran Tarja Turunen, Simone Simons, Sharon den Adel, ... Hoy en día mi mayor inspiración es Messiah Marcolin.

En algunas fotos de Mist noto cierta influencia del esoterismo, ¿es el mundo esotérico parte de la ideología de la banda? o ¿es sólo una imagen? muy aparte de esto veo que en algunas fotos de sus actuaciones en directo cantan con el cráneo de un animal, ¿cómo nació la idea de cantar con un cráneo en sus presentaciones?
Sí, en la canción "Under The Nights Sky" hay una parte de un ritual donde utilizo el cráneo de un venado con cuernos. Utilizamos cráneos, cuernos y velas con  parte de los accesorios para el escenario. Nos gusta dar ese encanto de brujas a la etapa en la que llevamos a cabo. La mayoría de los cráneos los recibí de mi abuelo, él es un cazador. Algunos miembros de la banda tenemos un interés en algunas creencias esotéricas, pero todo es por curiosidad y la búsqueda de inspiración.

Tengo que decir que con los años que conozco a la banda veo un rápido crecimiento en Mist, muy aparte la banda tocó en numerosos festivales de Metal en Europa, pero me gustaría preguntarte, ¿cómo te sentiste cuando por primera vez cantaste con tus compañeros de Mist? y ¿cómo es la compartir cada show y gira con tus amigos en el camino para todos los espectáculos de la banda?
La primera vez cuando tuvimos la práctica era sólo yo, Mihaela y Ema estábamos probando con algunas canciones de Heavy Metal y yo estaba muy emocionada y nerviosa. Pero más tarde, cuando había pasado algún tiempo me di cuenta de que ellas son mi familia, me encantaba cantar delante de ellas con mucho menos estrés que la primera vez. Cada concierto con Mist es un evento alegre e inolvidable. No tiene precio para mí para mostrarle al mundo lo que hemos encantado en nuestra sala de ensayo.

Mist comenzó como una banda femenina, pero ahora la banda tiene un chico en la banda, así que ¿cómo se incluyo a este chico a tocar en Mist?
La guitarrista Nina Grizonic dejó la banda en el otoño del 2013 pero continuó escribiendo canciones y tocando en vivo. Encontramos nuestro nuevo guitarrista principal (Blaz Tansek) en Agosto del 2014 y ha contribuido mucho a la banda, pero lo más importante que él es un gran tipo que realmente se suma a nuestra energía como grupo.

Nina fue una buena entrevista, para poner fin a esta entrevista ¿tienes un mensaje a los lectores y fans de Mist?
Mist es arte, de las líricas, la música y la parte visual (obras de arte). Así es como nos sentimos al respecto. Creamos cada poco de nuestras almas, las líricas son nuestros corazones en la pantalla, la música de una extensión de la atmósfera en ellas, las obras retratan nuestros comienzos y crecimiento. Interview to Nina Spruk of Mist

Hails Nina, welcome for first time to Arsenal Del Metalero practicly one year ago, I interviewed your partner Neža Pečan, and it was about the demo of the band, now this year the band released an EP entitled: "Inan'",and for start this interview I would like asking how was record and release this production? and what mean the word: "Inan'" is a word in slovenian?
Hi, thank you for having me. Inan’ was recorded at the end of 2014 and it shows the progress we have made as a band since our first release. The title comes from the English word 'inane', meaning emptiness or void, describing the feeling of being lost and empty. We believe  the songs have generally improved. The sound is better, my vocals have gained more depth, feeling and control. The backing vocals are used more often, and the guitar solos are the song’s finishing touch, bringing out that extra feeling. Like the demo, our EP was recorded, mixed and mastered by Benjamin Kic. 

By the way, I like the art of this new album made by Mihaela Žitko, drummer of Mist, but what concept represent this art for the lyrics of this new production?
Both covers, for ¨Demo 2013¨ and ¨Inan'¨were created by our drummer, Mihaela Zitko. She has been an artist all her life and is currently attending art school. inan's cover portrays the diversity in nature, the living and the dead in coexistence. We seek inspiration in nature and its differences, especially in the human mind and soul, where each human being experiences their good and bad sides, which are forced to coexist.

Now, in what do you take inspiration Nina to write your lyrics? and when you sing how do you focus your vocal energy to express your own lyrics? 
Most of the lyrics are written by Neža and Ema. Neža looks for the inspiration within, describing her emotions and fears, feelings of loss and despair... On the other hand, Ema looks for inspiration in the outside world, describing what she sees rather than what she feels.  Every song on Inan' has a different story. Frozen Velvet and Inan' are about love, Under The Night Sky is a tale of witches casting spells in the moonlight and Phobia describes the feelings of terror and paranoia. I always focus on lyrics and emotions and try to express them with my vocals. Every song means something special to me so I work hard to add to the feel of each song  with my voice.

Tell me about you vocal techniques, you know many metal singers prepare their voice before to sing in live or record, what is your tecnique to prepare your vocal before every recording and performance in live? and who are your vocal influences?
My vocal techniques are simply to concentrate on breathing, warming up the diaphragm and facial muscles. When recording I help my vocal cords with prunes which sort of smoothen the voice and I like to drink some beer to calm my  nerves. It also helps to imagine I am on stage singing, sometimes holding a prop microphone in my hand to help with the act. My influences in high school were Tarja Turunen, Simone Simons, Sharon den Adel,… Nowadays my biggest inspiration is Messiah Marcolin.

In some pics of Mist I notice some influence of esoterism, so is the esoteric world part of the ideology of the band? or is just an image? very appart of this I see in some pics of your performance in live you sing with the skull of an animal, how born the idea to sing with a skull in your performance?
Yes, in the song Under the night sky there is a ritual part where I use a skull of deer with horns. We use skulls, horns and candles with candlestick for stage props. We like to give a witchy charm to the stage when we perform. Most of the skulls I got from my grandpa, he is a hunter. A few members of the band hold an interest in some esoteric beliefs, but it is all out of curiosity and seeking inspiration.

I have to say with the years I know the band I see a fast grow up in Mist, very appart the band played in many metal festivals in Europe, but I would like ask you, how do you felt you when you singed for first time with your partners of Mist? and how is share every show and tour with your friends in the road for every show of the band?
The first time when we had practice was just me, Mihaela and Ema and we were just jamming with some heavy metal songs and I was very excited and nervous. But later when some time had passed I realized that they are my family, I love them and I sing in front of them with a lot less stress than the first time. Every concert with Mist is a joyful event and unforgettable. It is priceless to me to show the world what we have charmed up in our rehearsal space.

Mist started like a female band, but actually the band have a boy in the band, so how was include this guy to play in Mist? 
Guitarist Nina Grizonic left the band in fall 2013 but we continued to write songs and play live. We found our new lead guitarist (Blaz Tansek) in August 2014 and he has contributed a lot to the band, but more importantly he is a great guy who really adds to our energy as a group.

Nina it was a good interview, to end this interview do you have a message to readers and Mist fans? 
Mist is art, from the lyrics, to music and the visual part (artworks). This is how we feel about it. We created every little bit from our souls, the lyrics are our hearts on display,  the music an extension of the atmosphere in them, the artworks portray our beginnings and growth.
