Interview to Alexandre de Orio and Marcus D’angelo of Claustrofobia

Interview by Luis Landeo
Alex is a great honor have this interview with you, as everybody knows claustrofobia is one of the best brazilians bands so my first question how was release this new album: Peste? and how was back to studios to record?
Alexandre de Orio: It was released on the end of the 2011, so actually we are to hit the road now, playing new songs and spread the new album. Maybe, next year (2013), we´ll tour in Europe. I hope to play also in South America and USA. Back to the studios is always nice because is the time that we realize the concretion about our new ideas, new songs and so on.
Usually all claustrofobia´s lyrics are in english but this album was in portuguese how born the idea of release an album in Portuguese? and do you think release the album in english?
Alexandre de Orio: Actually this is an old idea. We always talked about that and a lot of fans and band´s friends said us “hey, you need to release a Portuguese album” ´cause we always composed Portuguese songs but only one or two songs inside of an English album. Many fans identify itself with this kind of song ´cause is straighter and they can understand what we are speaking to. I think this is a great moment for that ´cause after lot of experiences in Europe and around Brazil, so a lot of thing to saying. And about in English album, yes sure!! We have some new songs for this album and a lot of other ideas, some sketches, whatever, I think that an English album coming soon.
How was the process to compose the music of this album and write the lyrics for this album?
Alexandre de Orio: It was a little different than the other ones ´cause it´s Portuguese and in general when we compose in Portuguese let´s straight to the point , many songs Marcus and Caio started an idea and after that me and Daniel suggested any other thing like a break or part´s transition or note, something like that.
Marcus D’angelo: Due a lot of things that happens with the band last 2 or 3 years i guess we have written the most inspirer lyrics ever. We have many good and bad things in Brazil and it is totally motivational too! So it is hard to explain because this time the things goes very natural, we have 18 years fighting in the underground scene so we are older and with more experience! Also to write in Portuguese is different than English due the fact it is our native language so it is natural for us. When we create some riffs we can imagine some ideas that mixed perfectly with the song. The same vibe you know what I mean? Of course sometimes it is not so simple but in this album things have naturally fluid. You must be always alert lot the ideas and then make notes every time and every place because the mind is sick!
By the way i would like ask about 2 songs in this album and are my favorite: Metal Maloka and Pinu da granada, can you tell me about the lyrics of this songs and in what you take inspiration for write the lyrics of this songs?
Marcus D’Angelo: Yeah these 2 songs are amazing vibe. Metal Malóka is something like our lifestyle living in Brazil and working hard and serious for the Metal Music Scene! It is not easy because the reality here don’t help us in NOTHING! We have to do it by ourselves we never had support among other things, all of these facts among others let us sometimes with revolt, you know, we are human kinds we have feelings, positive and negatives stuffs. Basically it is the rock and roll style but in the reality of the funcking third world! Pinu da Granada is about crazy people that likes to get into temptation doesn’t matter the kind of shit but do this all the time and never have learned, always repeat the same mistake and at the same time keep going and like it (laughs). It is ironic stuff about temptations. Each one has its!
The picture of the album have a monster virus but what represent this monster in the album? or what is the concept behind this art for the album?
Alexandre de Orio: I think this phrase explain “It´s worst than fever, Claustrofobia is Pest”. This is the peste song refrain. After many difficulties we are here, battling so hard to spread our song and play more and more. You know, the underground is too difficult but we are getting our space step by step. Let´s infected the world, (laughs).
Had you problems with the illegal downloads in this album? and is your opinnion about illegal downloads?
Alexandre de Orio: No. I think we have both sides of the coin. One of them, download the songs can spread the songs of a band and who knows become famous because of this. There are a lot of cases about that. So, it´s a great way to spread the name of the band. On the other hand, nowadays many bands doesn´t earn money with that, mainly the mainstream bands. This is an internet effect and of the globalized world. But in general, metal fans has both. They can downloads on internet but most of them, when they really enjoy the band, they buy it too.
Are you thinking in a South American tour for this year?
Alexandre de Orio: A long time we talk about that and this never happened. We are crazy to tour in South America. I know that the audience is fuckin´crazy!!Let´s see if in 2013 we can spread the Peste around of South America. We need to with find some good southamerican´s producers.
Well was nice this interview do you have a message for the fans?
Alexandre de Orio: First of all, thanks by interview. It´s nice to know that you and a lot of people in South America enjoy Claustrofobia so much. Sorry for the delay to send this interview.Thank you all fans for support and help us to spread the band around. I really hope to play in many coutries and cities in South America soon. We always working hard, we´ve just recorded a DVD here in São Paulo. For that we create our own festival called Peste Fest. It was amazing. It was with more two bands, Oitão and Project 46. Then, we´ll release a DVD with this show and other stuff. I´m finishing the English version about my metal book called “Brazilian Metal: Brazilian Rhythms Applied to Metal Guitar – New Ways for Guitar Riffs. Volume 1 – Samba Metal”.
